Veteran’s day is one of my favorite holidays!

American Heroes IIVeteran’s day is one of my favorite holidays! Freedom isn’t free. It comes with a price. And that price is paid every day by the men and women who serve and defend our country. Veteran’s Day is a great opportunity to remember those who are deployed around the world, and those who have served in the past. Think about the things they have given up in order to serve. And the times they’ve missed with their families, so that you and your family can remain free.

I had an amazing experience today. I attended a Veterans Day assembly at my kids school. As vice-chairman of the Governing Board I was seated on the stage next to the two speakers for the assembly. They turned out to be two of the most amazing people I have ever met. As a soldier in the Army, Bryant Jacobs was wounded in Iraq when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb. Bryant has spent the past two years at Walter Reed Hospital enduring 37 separate operations. His story was so humbling. I was also seated next to Jeanine Lundell, the widow of fallen soldier Scott Lundell. Scott died in a gun fight with the Taliban in Afghanistan leaving his young wife with four young children who attend our school.

When things are tough we tend to forget how incredibly fortunate we are to live in the greatest country on earth. We enjoy our many freedoms because people like Bryant and Scott are willing to pay the ultimate price to preserve them.

At the end of the assembly I stood next to these two amazing people and watched as the steady stream of Veterans attending the assembly formed a line to honor them. I looked into the eyes of the Veterans who stopped to shake their hands and I could see that as veterans they had a far greater understanding of the price these two had really paid.

This experience made me ask, so what am I doing? Am I doing enough?

I think we can all do MORE!
